Infertility

Traditional Chinese medicine complements traditional therapies such as in vitro fertilization to help improve fertility by optimizing all hormone levels through the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis. Dr. Paul Margarelli, a reproductive endocrinologist and the medical director of the Reproductive Medicine and Fertility Center in Colorado, found that by combining acupuncture with in vitro fertilization (IVF), 15% more women had successful pregnancies than those undergoing IVF alone.

Specific causes of infertility treatable by acupuncture:

Endometriosis and Fibroids

Endometriosis and fibroids change the condition of the endometrium and negatively affect proper implantation, making preganancy very difficult. If estrogen is not balanced by progesterone, it can stimulate uterine tissue to grow abnormally, leading to endometriosis and fibroids. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can help restore the balance between estrogen and progesterone.

When women get pregnant, their immune functions must be suppressed to let the fetus grow. If a woman's immune functions are not balanced, her body will attack the fetus, causing unsuccessful implantations and miscarriages. Acupuncture and herbs treats some of the causes of immune system imbalance such as estrogen dominance, adrenal fatigue, and imbalance of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

When using fertility drugs, the ovaries can be overstimulated, causing extreme swelling and leading to abdominal distention and the accumulation of water in the abdominal cavity. Furthermore, because too many follicles develop simultaneously, eggs cannot mature properly and may lead to miscarriage or the improper development of the fetus. Acupuncture and herbs can help reduce the symptoms and prevent ovarian hyperstimulation duuring in vitro fertilization.
